Jeepers......Death Wobble
It is August 2019. I am driving from a campground to Home Depot in Kirksville, Missouri. Bam! A car smacks in the drivers side. My Kia Soul is totaled
I purchase a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. It is advertised as a four wheels down flat towable behind a motor-home.
My first RV trip flat towing the 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk did not go well. I made the assumption my motor-home was shaking and in so doing my Jeep was as well.
I researched items that would permit or cause a motor-home front end to shake. In Michigan I changed the front shocks. No positive results from the shock replacements.
Upon reaching Denver I had Denver Spring and Suspension, Inc check the motor-home alignment. Nothing out of alignment, no adjustment needed. Motor-home was road tested with no negative results.
I reconnected the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. As I neared Dillion on I-70 In route to Grand Junction, Colorado the tow hitch fell from the motor-home's receiver hitch. The 5/8 inch retaining pin broke permitting the tow hitch to fall on to I-70.
Once stopped on the shoulder of I-70 the hitch was loaded in to the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. A camp located for one night. A new pin purchased and we continue our trip.
I am a member of Family Motor Coach Association. On FMCA form I posted my motor-home had an oscillating front end issue. Asking for help in curing this problem one person said they thought I was talking about Death Wobble. Up until this post I had never heard the term, Death Wobble. I did an internet search and was surprised about many people are having similar issues.
On FMCA's web site form a wiring harness part number was listed as a means to cure the Death Wobble issue. I purchased the item from Lakeland Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealership. They also installed the harness at my expense. In addition four new tires were installed.
In route to a local club outing I had two Death Wobble occurrences. I returned my Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk for further inspection to determine why the Death Wobble occurred after installation of the additional wiring harness.
After a full day at Lakeland Jeep I was told my Jeep was ready for pickup. I ask what was found. The response, it functions as intended. A second request for what was found was responded to in the same manner, it functions as intended.
My next trip was horribly flawed with numerous Death Wobble occurrences.
One extreme case of Death Wobble west of Winnemucca, NV broke both frames, the cross member supporting the radiator, front end grill, and damaged the RV rear end. I was forced to rent a U-Haul dolly to transport the Jeep Trailhawk to Kansas City, Missouri.
